Physiotherapy at home

Our chartered physiotherapists provide expert physiotherapy services in your own home. Using a holistic approach, the needs of each individual are fully addressed, taking into account all aspects of overall health.

A comprehensive assessment will be taken on the first visit. This includes questions around your medical history, recent events leading up to the appointment, health & social concerns, difficulties you are experiencing, pain & more. This helps to guide our thorough physical examination which is completed after. Depending on your needs, your physiotherapist may want to assess-

* walking * strength * balance * joint and muscle range * functional abilities * tone * posture* transfers outdoor walking * sitting balance * function

Our senior physiotherapists are fully qualified, registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council and are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. We pride ourselves on providing high-quality treatment, taking the time and care to understand your needs and how to best reach your goals.

We can help to optimise your function and independence, aiding you to lead an active and fulfilling life.

Physiotherapy can have huge benefits in enhancing quality of life, mental well-being and minimising functional decline. We will address physical and mental challenges and assist you to overcome these, such as fear of falling or anxiety to leave the house.

If it is identified other health professionals or services would be beneficial to treatment then we can liaise and refer on to these as required.

Who we can treat

Physiotherapy at home can treat anyone of any age who may prefer to be treated at home rather than in a clinic. We have specialist older people physiotherapists, neurological physiotherapists, learning disability physiotherapists as well as paediatric physiotherapists.

Physiotherapy at home can be particularly helpful in the older population or where mobility is restricted and it can save the hassle of travelling. Furthermore, seeing individuals at home allows us to see you in your own environment, helping to identify any functional or environmental issues and allows us to provide a more personalised treatment plan.

In older-people, physiotherapy has been found to play an important role in addressing age-related challenges and our older people specialists have advanced knowledge in elderly care and age-related conditions.

Regular tailored exercise can also have a significant impact on falls reduction and reducing the chance of developing major illnesses such as heart disease, dementia, stroke, cancer, arthritis and early death (NHS, UK).

How We Can Help

  • Mobility- Our physiotherapists will thoroughly assess your walking and stability and can assess for a suitable walking aid if needed. We can review indoor and outdoor mobility, identifying areas of weakness and concern. Physiotherapists are experts in detecting movement and functional difficulties and ways in which to overcome these. We will review your gait pattern, testing muscle strength and control and assess your walking speed and balance. Depending on your requirements we will devise a tailored treatment plan to help improve your walking and confidence, getting you stronger on your feet.

  • Balance- We can assess your balance and can provide a tailored balance and strengthening programme to target the identified areas of weakness. Regular balance exercises have been proven to reduce the risk of falls and help you to remain strong on your feet. There are many different components to balance, including joint range and movement, muscle strength, proprioception, sensation, vision and the vestibular system. Your physiotherapist will complete various tests to determine which areas need to be addressed.

  • Falls- Our physiotherapists will complete a thorough falls assessment at home to identify any hazards and specific fall risk factors. A comprehensive balance, mobility and physical assessment will be completed to help identify your risk of falling and enable us to develop an appropriate falls treatment plan. Advice and education on falls prevention and management will be provided. Physiotherapy has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of falls in older people using a tailored treatment plan. We use a holistic approach to treatment, enabling us to identify all areas of concern. We also help people who are fearful of falling and need help to improve confidence.

  • Joint or muscle injury or pain- Our physiotherapists can assess the affected joint or muscle and will also assess the surrounding joints and muscles. You may be suffering with arthritis, stiffness, pain, had a recent joint replacement or experienced an injury. Whatever the reason, your physiotherapist can help determine the cause of these symptoms and how best to manage this. We can assess back or neck pain as well as peripheral joints or muscles. Your physiotherapist will wish to look at how the joints are moving, the flexibility, strength and tone and may complete “special tests” to help guide their assessment further.

  • Recovery and rehabilitation- If you have recently been unwell, had surgery, have recently come out of hospital or have become gradually weaker over time then our physiotherapists can work with you to help you regain your strength and independence and maximise your independence. We can assess your bed mobility, chair and standing transfers and help build up your strength to get you back to full health.

  • Neurological conditions- Our neurological physiotherapists are able to see people with a wide range of neurological conditions include acute and long term conditions. They will provide a specialist treatment plan following an extensive assessment of your needs and requirements. They regularly treat adults and children. They are able to provide rehabilitation at home helping to maximise your function and improve your overall well-being.

Some of our physiotherapists are trained in aquatherapy/hydrotherapy and are able to see you in a warm pool as required.
